As you cruise the river, keep your camera ready—unusual birds and mammals such as capybaras and caimans often rest along the riverbanks. Upon arrival at the lodge, you’ll have time to relax and refresh.
Later, we’ll embark on a guided introductory walk through the jungle to learn about the local biodiversity and the story behind Amazon Nature.
As night falls, you’ll experience the unique sounds of the rainforest, with the option to join a night walk to discover insects, bats, and nocturnal mammals. Dinner will be served at the lodge. (Lunch, Dinner)
Day 2 – Macaw Clay Lick Magic & Nighttime Jungle Walk.
We’ll start early with a light breakfast, followed by a 40-minute boat ride upstream to the renowned “El Chuncho” Macaw Clay Lick.
If weather conditions are favorable, you’ll witness one of nature’s most mesmerizing spectacles: hundreds of parrots and macaws gathering to feast on mineral-rich clay.
A breathtaking landscape surrounds you as you walk along the river beach, searching for animal tracks. After a light snack, we’ll return to the lodge for a well-earned breakfast.
In the afternoon, enjoy some downtime or take part in thrilling activities like canopy walks or tree climbing.
Just minutes from our lodge are the “Cascadas del Gato” (Cat Waterfalls), a natural paradise where you can swim in a jungle jacuzzi. You may also join a fishing excursion on the river.
After lunch, we’ll head out on an ethnobotanical jungle hike to learn about medicinal plants used by local communities.
At night, we’ll embark on a thrilling river expedition in search of caimans. (Breakfast, Dinner)

After a delicious breakfast, we’ll set off on a 3-hour journey along the Madre de Dios River to reach a new jungle lodge.
Following a short rest, we’ll venture on a 2-hour hike deep into the heart of the rainforest. Your expert guide will introduce you to towering trees over 500 years old and an astonishing array of
wildlife, including birds, monkeys, and butterflies.
In the evening, we’ll explore the river again in search of caimans—watch for their glowing eyes in the darkness—and may encounter capybaras and other nocturnal creatures. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Day 4 – Sandoval Lake & Wildlife in the Tambopata National Reserve
After breakfast, we’ll cross to the other side of our eco-lodge to visit Monkey Island, a lush sanctuary where several species of monkeys swing freely through the trees. Watch these agile primates
leap from branch to branch — an unforgettable wildlife encounter.
Next, we’ll head into the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve. A scenic 5-kilometer trek through pristine rainforest will take us to the breathtaking Sandoval Lake, a mirror-like oxbow lake
surrounded by towering palm trees and dense jungle.
This protected lake teems with wildlife: colorful birds, playful monkeys, and slow-moving sloths are common sightings. With a bit of luck, you may even spot the elusive giant river otter or a rare
black caiman, one of the Amazon’s most endangered predators.
After a delicious Amazonian lunch, we’ll embark on a serene canoe ride across the lake, offering an intimate glimpse into the vibrant ecosystem. As the golden afternoon light bathes the forest,
we’ll make our way back to the lodge for a relaxing evening. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

pumping in a truly wild setting.
You’ll be guided at all times by a certified expert, ensuring your safety while maximizing excitement.

Nestled in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, the Tambopata National Reserve stands as one of the most biodiverse places on Earth—a true sanctuary for birds. With approximately 648 bird species recorded across 388 genera and 60 families, Tambopata is an essential destination for avid birdwatchers and wildlife photographers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime rainforest experience.
Iconic Birds of Tambopata: Nature’s Masterpieces in Flight
Tambopata’s skies and forests are home to some of the most spectacular and elusive birds of the neotropics. Here are a few of the reserve’s most emblematic species:
Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja)
Regarded as one of the most powerful raptors in the world, the harpy eagle is a living emblem of pristine Amazonian forests. With its enormous talons and piercing eyes, this apex predator is at the top of every wildlife traveler’s sighting wishlist.
Crested Eagle (Morphnus guianensis)
Lesser-known but equally captivating, the crested eagle is distinguished by its graceful feathered crest and stealthy gliding through the upper canopy. Its presence signals the richness and intactness of the rainforest.
Razor-billed Curassow (Mitu tuberosa)
A large ground-dwelling bird of the understory, the curassow is a sensitive species that thrives only in undisturbed habitats. Spotting one is a promising sign of a healthy, well-preserved ecosystem.
Red-and-Green Macaw (Ara chloropterus)
This charismatic and brilliantly colored macaw lights up the jungle canopy with its vibrant scarlet, green, and blue feathers, accompanied by loud, raucous calls. Often seen flying in pairs, it’s a favorite among bird photographers.
Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao)
A true icon of the South American tropics, the scarlet macaw is celebrated for its vivid colors and strong social bonds. It’s frequently observed in pairs or flocks, especially at Tambopata’s famous clay licks, where hundreds of macaws gather to feed on mineral-rich soil—a spectacle not to be missed.
What Makes Tambopata’s Birdlife So Unique?
Tambopata’s avian richness is largely due to its strategic location—a crossroads between lowland Amazon rainforest, Andean foothills, and seasonally flooded plains. This extraordinary diversity of ecosystems creates ideal conditions for both resident and migratory birds, offering a stunning variety of sizes, colors, and behaviors.
From tiny hummingbirds zipping among the flowers to giant eagles soaring high above the canopy, the sheer diversity of bird species in Tambopata amazes even seasoned ornithologists. Each trail, river bend, and tree canopy hides the potential for unforgettable encounters.
