Manu Short Trips – 4 Days
We begin our tour to Manu National Park very early in the morning, with hotel pick-up between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., traveling in a comfortable private tourist bus.
Along the route, we stop at the Chullpas of Ninamarca, impressive pre-Inca funerary towers located at 3,750 m (12,303 ft) above sea level, preserving part of the ancient Andean history.
We then continue to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, famous for its historic stone bridge and vibrant folkloric traditions that remain alive during its colorful festivals.
The journey continues to the Acjanaco Pass (4,000 m / 13,123 ft), considered the official gateway to Manu National Park. From here, we descend into the fascinating Cloud Forest, a unique ecosystem rich in biodiversity. Along the way, you will observe orchids, heliconias, ancient ferns, and a wide variety of bird species.
We take a special hike to observe the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru’s national bird, famous for its spectacular mating dance. With some luck, we may also spot quetzals, trogons, and even the elusive spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), one of South America’s most iconic mammals.
In the afternoon, we arrive at the Amazonian town of Pilcopata (550 m / 1,804 ft), where we spend the night in an eco-lodge surrounded by nature.
Day 2: Amazon Rainforest Adventure – Atalaya Port & Rainforest Lodge
After a delicious Amazonian breakfast, we head to Atalaya Port, the entrance point to the lush rainforest of Manu National Park. Here, we board a motorized boat to navigate the Madre de Dios River, one of the most important rivers in the Peruvian Amazon.
During the river journey, you may spot exotic birds, sunbathing turtles, and caimans resting along the riverbanks. This scenic boat ride is perfect for nature lovers and wildlife photography.
Upon arrival at the Rainforest Lodge, you will be welcomed with a freshly prepared lunch surrounded by jungle sounds and fresh Amazon air.
In the afternoon, we embark on a guided jungle trek, exploring forest trails where fascinating species such as tarantulas, playful monkeys, wild orchids, and towering palm trees abound.
After nightfall, we enjoy a night walk in the Amazon rainforest, discovering the secret world of nocturnal wildlife: colorful frogs, unique insects, and with luck, the magical sight of a sloth in its natural habitat.
Day 3: Manu Amazon Adventure – Zipline & Machuwasi Lake
The third day of our Manu Rainforest Tour is designed for adventure and nature lovers. Early in the morning, we begin a guided hike through the tropical rainforest, learning about Amazon biodiversity and medicinal plants traditionally used by local communities.
With some luck, you may spot jaguars, pumas, or giant anteaters roaming freely in their natural habitat.
Next comes an adrenaline-filled experience: ziplining in the Peruvian Amazon, gliding from platform to platform high above the forest canopy, enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the jungle.
After the adventure, relax and recharge in the natural hot springs of Manu, surrounded by pristine rainforest.
In the afternoon, we visit Machuwasi Lake, where you board a traditional wooden raft for a peaceful journey across the lake. Here, you can observe unique wildlife such as the hoatzin, a prehistoric-looking bird, as well as turtles, caimans, and aquatic birds.
The day ends with an unforgettable experience: a night boat ride on the Madre de Dios River, offering opportunities to spot caimans and nocturnal birds, experiencing the Amazon rainforest from a magical and different perspective.
Day 4: Parrot Clay Lick & Return to Cusco
The final day of our Peruvian Amazon expedition begins very early with a truly unique experience: a visit to the Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick (Collpa de Loros), one of the most fascinating natural spectacles in the Manu Rainforest.
Every morning, parrots, macaws, and parakeets arrive in colorful flocks to feed on the mineral-rich clay found along the riverbanks. This natural ritual provides essential nutrients and creates a vibrant, sound-filled jungle scene. It is the perfect moment for birdwatching and wildlife photography in the Amazon.
After this extraordinary encounter with rainforest biodiversity, we return to the Rainforest Lodge for a nourishing breakfast and pack our belongings. We then board the boat back to Atalaya Port, where a private vehicle awaits for our scenic drive back to Cusco, traveling through breathtaking Andean and Amazon landscapes that mark the perfect end to this unforgettable adventure.
