Tour Summary – Amazon Travels Booking – Sandoval Lake

Day 1: Arrival and Jungle Exploration

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, you will be transferred to the lodge, where you can rest and enjoy a tropical juice. You will then take a two-hour guided hike through the jungle, observing flora and fauna, such as toucans and monkeys. After lunch, you will visit the “Monkey Island”, home to various species. As night falls, you will take an excursion to spot alligators on the Madre de Dios River.

Day 2: Sandoval Lake and Return

After an early breakfast, you will travel by boat and hike through the jungle to reach Sandoval Lake. There, you will explore the lake by canoe, observing birds, monkeys and possible giant otters. At midday, you will return to the lodge for lunch and then head back to Puerto Maldonado.

This tour offers an immersion in the biodiversity of the Amazon, combining hiking, sailing and wildlife spotting in its natural habitat.

Enjoy Lake Sandoval and the Amazon Rainforest in Puerto Maldonado

Experience the most beautiful and stunning lakes in the Peruvian Amazon. Lake Sandoval, a masterpiece of geography, originates from one of the meanders of the Madre de Dios River. It stretches 3 kilometers in length and 900 meters in width, with depths ranging from 3 to 9 meters. Shaped like a crescent moon, Lake Sandoval is surrounded by broad water channels and a swampy ecosystem where Mauritia flexuosa palms grow, with their branches reaching into the lake. Observing mahogany trees, Tungurahua, lapona, and platillos, it’s an excellent space for birdwatching, including herons, macaws, parrots, kingfishers, wild ducks, hoatzins, and various species of lizards, black caimans, giant river otters, small primates, monkeys, tapirs, turtles, and a multitude of butterflies.

Day 1: Amazon Travels – Lake Sandoval

Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, our team will be waiting to greet you and transfer you to our office, where we will provide all the information you need to begin your exciting tour.

Next, we will head to the port to board a boat that will take us for an hour to our jungle lodge. Upon arrival, you’ll

be welcomed with a delicious tropical fruit juice before settling into your comfortable room.

After a brief rest, we’ll embark on a two-hour introductory hike into the jungle. Guided by an expert local, you’ll

explore trails revealing ancient trees and have the chance to observe Amazonian wildlife, including colorful toucans,

brilliant oropendolas, chatty parrots, playful monkeys, fascinating snakes, and dazzling butterflies. You’ll immerse yourself in the magic of the Tambopata National Reserve, a vast paradise of 278,000 hectares protected by Peruvian laws.

After lunch, we’ll cross the Madre de Dios River to visit the fascinating “Monkey Island.”

In this sanctuary, you’ll see various monkey species such as the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, saddleback tamarin, and white capuchin, enjoying a unique experience in their natural habitat.

We’ll then return to the lodge to relax.

As night falls, we’ll embark on an exciting caiman search along the banks of the Madre de Dios River. Don’t forget to

bring a flashlight for this nocturnal adventure.

With some luck, you might spot the capybara, the world’s largest rodent, which can weigh up to 60 kilograms and is an impressive representation of the Peruvian cuy.

Finally, we’ll return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious dinner and spend a restful night in this magical corner of the jungle.

Day 2: Amazon Travels Lake Sandoval / Puerto Maldonado / Land Terminal

Explore the Lake Sandoval Reserve. After a delicious breakfast, we’ll head to the port to board a motorized boat, traveling upstream. Along the way, we’ll make stops at the entrance to Lake Sandoval Reserve.

From there, we’ll begin a 3-kilometer walk to a small port where a rowing canoe will be waiting to navigate us into the heart of Lake Sandoval.

After an early and revitalizing breakfast, we’ll take a boat to the majestic Lake Sandoval. Once there and after

passing through the checkpoint, we’ll start a 3-kilometer (approximately 2 miles) walk through the lush tropical

rainforest to reach the lake, one of the greatest treasures of the Tambopata National Reserve and home to enigmatic piranhas.

After this immersive walk, we’ll board a rowing boat to explore the tranquil waters of the lake. During our

navigation, you’ll have the chance to observe a surprising variety of birds and monkeys, from the curious hoatzin

and elegant cormorants to jacanas and majestic eagles. In the forest, you may admire howler monkeys, squirrel

monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and slow-moving sloths.

Additionally, with some luck, we might encounter the impressive giant river otters, which can grow up to nearly two

meters long and are critically endangered. We might also spot the largest recorded caiman, measuring over 4 meters in length.

After this unforgettable experience, we’ll return to the lodge to enjoy a typical lunch filled with local flavors before

heading back to the city, carrying with us unique memories of the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon Peru.
