Itinerary: Amazon Tour – Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick & Sandoval Lake

The wildlife observed during the tour is wild, so sightings can never be guaranteed. This uncertainty is precisely part of the authentic experience of exploring the rainforest.

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata National Reserve – Lodge

The adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon.

After meeting at the previously agreed meeting point, we will begin our journey into the rainforest. Depending on the lodge’s location and the program conditions, part of the journey will be by road, followed by a boat ride.

As we travel, you will gradually notice the urban landscape disappearing and being replaced by the Amazon rainforest.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you will have time to settle in and enjoy lunch.

Rainforest Interpretive Walk: In the afternoon, we will take an interpretive walk through the tropical rainforest.

Accompanied by a local guide, you will learn to identify some of the tree species, medicinal plants, fruits, and other elements that make up this complex ecosystem.

The walk will also be an opportunity to look for birds, insects, amphibians, and small mammals that inhabit the forest.

Observation Tower: Depending on the program conditions, you may visit an observation tower or platform, offering a different perspective of the Amazon rainforest.

From above, it is possible to observe bird activity and appreciate the vastness of the forest surrounding the lodge.

Night Safari: When night falls, the Amazon completely changes.

We will take part in a nighttime activity to search for caimans, frogs, insects, and other nocturnal species.

With the help of flashlights and the experience of your guide, you will learn to identify sounds and movements that often go unnoticed during the day.

Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – Wildlife Observation

The second day begins very early.

An early departure is essential to reach the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick during the period of greatest bird activity.

After navigating along the river, we will arrive at an observation point where we can wait for this spectacular natural event.

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick: One of the Great Spectacles of the Rainforest

Clay licks are places where different bird species consume minerals found in certain areas of exposed soil.

At Chuncho, you may have the opportunity to observe macaws, parrots, and parakeets gathering at the clay lick.

The vivid colors of the macaws contrast with the deep green of the rainforest, creating one of the most memorable moments of the trip.

Bird activity depends on natural factors such as weather, rainfall, the presence of predators, and environmental conditions. Therefore, wildlife observation is an authentic experience rather than a staged show.

Return to the Lodge: After enjoying the clay lick, we will begin our journey back to the lodge.

Depending on river and weather conditions and the scheduled program, we may participate in an additional nature- or water-based activity.

After lunch, you will have time to relax or enjoy the surroundings of the lodge.

Night Walk: At nightfall, we will explore the forest once again.

The rainforest at night offers a completely different experience: the sounds of amphibians, insects, nocturnal birds, and other animals that remain hidden during the day.

Day 3: Sandoval Lake – Tambopata National Reserve – Puerto Maldonado

The final day is dedicated to one of the most iconic destinations in the Puerto Maldonado Amazon: Sandoval Lake.

After the appropriate transfer and access, we will begin a walk through the forest until reaching the lake.

Sandoval Lake: Nature and Tranquility in the Heart of the Amazon

Sandoval Lake is known for its calm waters and the rainforest that surrounds it.

The excursion combines hiking and canoe navigation, allowing us to explore different areas of the ecosystem.

During the excursion, we may search for:

• Monkeys and other mammal species.
• Amazonian birds.
• Turtles.
• Caimans.
• Giant river otters, with luck.
• Butterflies and other insects.
• Different species of Amazonian plants and trees.
