Day 1: Welcome to Tambopata – First Encounter with the Amazon Jungle
Your expedition begins in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. We’ll greet you at the airport or bus terminal and transfer you to our main office to register and store any heavy luggage. From there, a private transfer takes you to the Tambopata River port, where we board a motorized canoe and travel upstream.
Along the way, watch for capybaras, turtles, caimans, and a wide variety of colorful birds. Upon arrival at our Amazon lodge, you’ll settle into private accommodations surrounded by lush nature.
In the afternoon, we’ll take an introductory hike into the rainforest to observe native wildlife, such as monkeys, tropical birds, amphibians, insects, and reptiles. After dark, we’ll set out on a night walk—a rare opportunity to experience the jungle as it awakens under the stars.
Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – The Amazon’s Greatest Natural Show
We rise early (4:30 a.m.) to witness one of the Amazon’s most stunning spectacles: the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, the largest of its kind in the world.
During the boat journey (approx. 1.5 hours), you may spot:
Capybaras, the world’s largest rodents
Tapirs in their natural habitat –birdwatchers
And, with a bit of luck… the elusive jaguar
At the clay lick, you’ll watch hundreds of brightly colored macaws and parrots gather on mineral-rich cliffs to feed—an unforgettable sight enjoyed alongside a traditional jungle breakfast.
We’ll return downstream to the lodge for a delicious lunch, then head by private vehicle back to Puerto Maldonado. From there, another boat ride down the Madre de Dios River takes us to our second Amazon lodge.
Later, we’ll visit Monkey Island, home to several primate species including:
Brown capuchin monkeys
Squirrel monkeys ,Saddleback tamarins
At night, we’ll embark on a river safari, searching for white caimans, capybaras, and other fascinating nocturnal wildlife that thrive under the cover of darkness.
Day 3: Sandoval Lake – The Heart of Tambopata National Reserve
After breakfast, we travel by boat to the entrance of Sandoval Lake. From there, a 3 km hike through dense jungle leads us to the lake’s main dock.
We’ll explore this hidden gem by rowing boat, gliding across calm waters shrouded in morning mist. Wildlife you may encounter includes:
Tropical birds: hoatzins, herons, cormorants, vultures
Howler monkeys, capuchins, tamarins, and sloths
And, with luck, the giant river otter—a rare and endangered species
A traditional jungle lunch will be served amidst the serene natural surroundings. In the afternoon, we return to the lodge for rest. After dinner, we venture out on another night walk—perfect for spotting amphibians, frogs, spiders, and a variety of rare rainforest insects that come alive after dark.
Day 4: Canopy Walk and Farewell from the Treetops
At 5:30 a.m., we set off for one of the most memorable parts of the journey: the canopy walkway, a hanging bridge suspended 30 meters above the forest floor.
From this unique vantage point, enjoy panoramic views of the Madre de Dios River and the vibrant jungle canopy. It’s also a prime birdwatching spot, where you may see:
