Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Monkey Island – Caiman Observation

The adventure begins with pickup at the airport or bus terminal in Puerto Maldonado. From there, we will transfer to our office to complete the registration process and receive a brief orientation before beginning our journey into the rainforest.

If you have luggage that you will not need during the expedition, you can safely leave it at our office to make traveling through the Amazon more convenient.

Before leaving the city, you will have the opportunity to visit some points of interest in Puerto Maldonado and enjoy a panoramic view from Grau Square, where you can appreciate the surrounding landscape of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers.

Navigation on the Madre de Dios River : We will then head to the port of Triunfo to begin an approximately 40-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to our Amazonian lodge.

During the journey, you will be able to observe the riverside landscape and begin familiarizing yourself with the sounds and scenery of the rainforest.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you will receive a welcome drink and a brief explanation of the activities and services available during your stay. You will then have time to settle into your room and rest for a few minutes.

Monkey Island : This activity allows you to enjoy the Amazonian landscape from a different perspective and appreciate the tranquility of the river as we travel along its waters.

We will then visit the area known as Monkey Island, where it is possible to observe different species of primates and other wildlife.

Wildlife observation is carried out while respecting the natural behavior of the animals and the conservation regulations of the area.

After returning to the lodge, you will have free time to relax in the common areas, rest in a hammock by the river, and enjoy the Amazonian scenery.

Night Excursion in Search of Caimans and Capybaras : As darkness falls, we will take a nighttime boat excursion along the riverbanks to search for caimans and other nocturnal species.

With the help of flashlights, we will explore the riverside areas and look for the reflections of caimans’ eyes in the darkness.

There is also a possibility of encountering capybaras, nocturnal birds, amphibians, and other animals that become active after sunset.

Finally, we will return to the lodge for dinner and spend our first night in the Amazon.

Accommodation:  Lodge Inn

Day 2: Sandoval Lake – Navigation – Rainforest Hike – Night Walk

After breakfast, we will begin our excursion to one of the best-known natural attractions in the Tambopata National Reserve: Sandoval Lake.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., we will board a boat for a roughly 20-minute journey along the Madre de Dios River to the entrance point to the lake.

Hike to Sandoval Lake

After disembarking, we will begin a hike through the forest to the Tambopata National Reserve checkpoint.

After completing the required registration, we will continue along the approximately 3-kilometer trail leading to the shores of Sandoval Lake.

This hike provides an excellent opportunity to discover the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest. Depending on the conditions of the day, we may encounter monkeys, birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and different species of plants.

The hike also provides an opportunity to learn about trees and plants traditionally used by local communities and to understand the relationship between the forest and Amazonian communities.

Exploring Sandoval Lake

Upon reaching the lake, we will board a traditional rowing canoe to explore its waters at a relaxed pace.

Sandoval Lake is known for its beautiful scenery and the diversity of species that inhabit its aquatic environments and surrounding forests.

During the canoe ride, we will look for species such as hoatzins, cormorants, anhingas, and different waterbirds. With favorable conditions and a little luck, we may also have the opportunity to observe giant river otters, one of the most emblematic species of this ecosystem.

After exploring the lake, we will enjoy lunch and have some time to rest.

Wildlife observation is a natural activity, and the presence of different species varies depending on the season, weather, and forest conditions.

Return to the Lodge

In the afternoon, we will begin our return journey to the Madre de Dios River, where we will board the boat again and return to the lodge.

Once there, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the rainforest.

For those who wish to continue exploring, there is the possibility of taking an optional night walk, an ideal way to discover a completely different side of the forest.

During this activity, we may search for insects, spiders, amphibians, reptiles, and other small nocturnal animals.

After dinner, we will spend the night at the lodge.

Accommodation: lodge.

Day 3: Upper Tambopata – Primary Rainforest – Night Walk

After breakfast, we will begin our journey toward the Upper Tambopata, an area known for its Amazonian forests and excellent opportunities for nature observation.

The journey combines boat and land transportation. From the lodge, we will travel toward Puerto Maldonado and then continue by road to the access area of the Tambopata River.

The landscape gradually changes as we move away from the city and enter increasingly natural environments.

Upon reaching the Tambopata River, we will continue by boat for approximately 30 minutes to our next lodge.

During the navigation, we may observe riverside birds, capybaras, caimans, and other species, depending on river conditions and wildlife behavior.

Primary Rainforest Hike : After settling in and having lunch, we will take a guided hike through the primary rainforest of Tambopata.

The hike will allow us to discover large trees and different rainforest plants while the guide explains the ecological importance of the forest and the main economic activities of Madre de Dios, such as agriculture, Brazil nut harvesting, ecotourism, and other activities developed in the region.

During the hike, we will pay close attention to the sounds and movements of the forest in an effort to locate monkeys, birds, and other mammals.

Night Safari : As night falls, we will return to the lodge to prepare for another nighttime excursion.

We will navigate along the river in search of caimans, capybaras, and other animals that become active after sunset.

The nighttime experience offers a completely different perspective of the rainforest: the sounds change, many animals become active, and the forest takes on a unique atmosphere.

After dinner, those who still wish to continue the adventure can take a short night walk around the lodge.

With the help of flashlights, we will search for insects, arachnids, tarantulas, amphibians, and reptiles. With some luck, we may also encounter other nocturnal animals.

Accommodation:  lodge Inn

Day 4: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – Upper Tambopata – Puerto Maldonado

The final day begins very early. At approximately 4:30 a.m., we will begin traveling upstream toward the famous Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick.

The early departure is essential to reach the clay lick during the birds’ first hours of activity.

As we navigate along the Tambopata River, we will enjoy the sunrise over the rainforest and observe the landscape surrounding one of the most impressive areas of this Amazonian region.

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick : The Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick is one of Tambopata’s best-known destinations for observing parrots and macaws.

Upon arrival, we will settle into an observation area where we can watch the activity of numerous birds gathering in the area.

Depending on natural conditions, we may observe different species of parrots and macaws approaching the clay wall.

The clay is part of the diet of various bird species, and this behavior is one of the most fascinating natural spectacles in the Peruvian Amazon.

The activity usually takes place over several hours in the morning, although bird behavior may vary depending on weather conditions and other natural factors.

During the visit, we will have time to observe, photograph, and learn about the importance of clay licks for Amazonian wildlife.

We will enjoy breakfast while taking in the scenery of the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick.

Return and Final Activities : After the visit, we will return toward the accommodation area and make a brief visit to the checkpoint and, when available, the small interpretive center or museum in the area.

We will then have lunch and some time to rest.

Later, we may visit El Gato Creek, depending on the conditions of the program and the river level. This area allows us to appreciate another natural environment of the region and learn about some of the crops and traditional activities developed in Madre de Dios.

Finally, we will begin our return journey to Puerto Maldonado, combining boat and land transportation.

The adventure ends with a transfer to the city, airport, or bus terminal, depending on each traveler’s departure schedule.
