Classic Tour Amazon Expeditions – A Journey into the Heart of the Peruvian Rainforest
Get ready to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure deep in the Amazon rainforest. This 5-day expedition offers the perfect blend of biodiversity, culture, and thrilling activities. From spotting vibrant tropical birds to fishing for piranhas, every moment promises awe and wonder. Here’s everything you need to know about this epic jungle experience.
Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Welcome to Classic Tour Amazon Expeditions 5 Days
Your adventure kicks off in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. Upon arrival, our friendly local guide will greet you at the airport and take you to our welcome center. This is a great opportunity to make any last-minute purchases such as batteries, insect repellent, or rain ponchos.
From here, your journey into the jungle begins. We’ll travel for about 1 hour by land, followed by an exciting motorized canoe ride along the Tambopata River. As we cruise through this breathtaking landscape, keep your eyes open for unfamiliar birds like herons, cormorants, wild turkeys, vultures, tiger herons, and even majestic eagles.
Upon arrival at our eco-lodge, you’ll settle into your private room, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the rainforest.
In the afternoon, enjoy a delicious local Amazonian lunch, then head out for a guided hike through pristine primary rainforest. Along the way, you’ll encounter an astonishing variety of birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and monkeys—and if you’re lucky, you might spot larger mammals roaming freely in their natural habitat.
As night falls, we’ll venture out on a night walk through the jungle. This is your chance to see the Amazon come alive after dark. Look for nocturnal monkeys, colorful frogs, tarantulas, and other fascinating creatures that only emerge under the cover of night.
We’ll return to the lodge to enjoy a hearty Amazonian dinner, ending the day immersed in the sounds and flavors of the rainforest.
Day 2: Classic Tour Amazon Expeditions 5 Days– Chuncho Clay Lick & Jungle Piranha Fishing .
The day starts early with an unforgettable journey to Chuncho Clay Lick, perched on a 10-meter-high clay bank along the Tambopata River. This is one of nature’s most dazzling spectacles: dozens of colorful parrots and macaws gather in the early morning light to feed on the mineral-rich clay. This breathtaking natural event can last over three hours and offers a magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience for wildlife lovers and photographers.
After immersing ourselves in this vibrant display, we head toward a nearby spot along the Malinowski River for a traditional piranha fishing adventure in the heart of the Amazon. This peaceful activity allows you to connect with the serenity of the jungle while trying your luck with one of the Amazon’s most iconic fish.
By midday, we return to our jungle lodge for a delicious lunch and some well-deserved rest. In the afternoon, we
embark on a guided walk through pristine primary rainforest, where you’ll encounter an incredible variety of wildlife
—including monkeys, birds, insects, reptiles, and much more—while learning about the complex ecosystem of the Amazon.
After dinner, the adventure continues. We board our motorized canoe and cruise along the Tambopata River under the stars. Equipped with flashlights, we search for nocturnal wildlife such as caimans, night birds, turtles, and even owls. The night concludes with a cozy campfire gathering at the lodge, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle.
Day 3: Sandoval Lake Reserve – Canoe Tour & Amazon Jungle Hikes
After breakfast, we begin our journey to the famous Sandoval Lake. We board a motorboat along the Tambopata River, heading to the main entrance of Tambopata National Reserve, where our private transport awaits to take us back to Puerto Maldonado for a short stop.
Soon after, we head to Capitanía Port and navigate downstream the Madre de Dios River for about 40 minutes. Upon arriving at the main checkpoint of Sandoval Lake Reserve, we begin a 3-kilometer jungle hike on a flat trail, observing
the amazing biodiversity of the reserve—including non-native birds, butterflies, and ancient trees.
At the end of the trail, we board a hand-paddled canoe for an hour-long ride across the serene waters of Sandoval Lake, eventually arriving at our eco-lodge located on the lake’s edge.
After settling into your private room, we take a short walk around the lodge to explore its lush surroundings,
followed by a freshly prepared Amazonian lunch.
In the afternoon, we return to our canoe and begin a magical exploration of Sandoval Lake, where you’ll have the chance to spot giant river otters, black caimans, hoatzins, herons, and nightjars. As the sun sets, we embark on a
night canoe excursion, using lanterns to search for nocturnal animals and reflections of red caiman eyes on the water.
The day ends back at the lodge with a traditional dinner and peaceful rest, immersed in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.
Day 4: Classic Tour Amazon Expeditions : Palm Lick & Wildlife Observation – A Day of Jungle Adventure
Wake up to adventure! Today, we rise early to capture the magical colors of the Amazon sunrise — a perfect opportunity for stunning wildlife photography as the forest awakens.
After returning to the lodge, enjoy a delicious breakfast that will energize you for one of the most thrilling experiences in the Amazon.
We head back to the majestic Madre de Dios River for an unforgettable canopy adventure above the treetops. First,
we climb a 27-meter (88-foot) tower that connects to an 89-meter (292-foot) hanging bridge suspended high in the
jungle canopy. From up here, you’ll cross through the upper layers of the forest — a hidden world where monkeys, toucans, and other wildlife roam, far from the forest floor.
The excitement builds as we reach the highlight: a 190-meter (623-foot) zip line ride through the jungle air. Feel the
adrenaline as you glide like a bird over the emerald canopy, securely harnessed and guided by professionals. It’s a heart-pounding and unforgettable way to experience the Amazon from above!
Day 5: Return to Puerto Maldonado – Sunrise at Lake Sandoval & Last Jungle Memories
It’s another early morning, but one you won’t regret. At 6:30 a.m., we depart for a final exploration of Lake Sandoval
during a peaceful sunrise, when the jungle comes alive with movement and sound. This is your best chance to
witness the famous giant river otters, as well as many bird species and playful monkeys.
We paddle along the western edge of the lake, where towering palm trees over 30 meters tall are beautifully
reflected in the still waters of the aguajales (palm swamps). This surreal landscape will stay etched in your memory —
a breathtaking farewell to the Amazon rainforest.
Afterward, we return to the eco-lodge for breakfast and pack our things. Then, we transfer to the riverbank, where a
boat will take you back to Puerto Maldonado. Depending on your travel plans, we’ll drop you off at the bus station or
airport. We recommend booking an afternoon flight to allow time for a smooth return from the jungle.

Witness the Vibrant Macaw Spectacle in Tambopata National Reserve, Peru
Deep in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, the Tambopata National Reserve offers one of nature’s most breathtaking displays: the daily gathering of brilliantly colored macaws and parrots at the clay licks. These natural formations, found along the riverbanks, act as powerful magnets for these birds, who arrive in flocks to consume the mineral-rich clay essential to their diet.
At dawn, the skies over Tambopata burst into a kaleidoscope of color as hundreds of scarlet, blue-and-yellow, and green-winged macaws descend upon the clay cliffs. This dazzling ritual is not only a mesmerizing visual experience, but also plays a vital role in the birds’ nutrition and survival in the wild rainforest.
Tambopata is a true birdwatcher’s paradise, home to over 600 recorded bird species. Among them, the majestic macaws steal the spotlight with their graceful aerial choreography—a rare and unforgettable experience for every traveler lucky enough to witness it in person.
