Tambopata and Sandoval Lake Tour – 6 Days: Adventure in the Peruvian Amazon

Discover the extraordinary biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon with this 6-day tour through Tambopata and Sandoval Lake, designed for travelers who want to combine nature, wildlife observation, jungle hikes, and adventure experiences.

During the journey, you will navigate the Madre de Dios and Tambopata Rivers, explore the surroundings of the Tambopata National Reserve, visit the impressive Sandoval Lake, and have the opportunity to observe monkeys, birds, caimans, giant river otters, turtles, and other Amazonian species in their natural habitat.

The experience also includes daytime and nighttime jungle walks, piranha fishing, canopy excursions, and a visit to the famous Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, one of the most fascinating natural spectacles in the Tambopata region.

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Monkey Island – Amazon Lodge

Your adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. Our team will meet you at the airport or bus terminal and accompany you during the first stages of your journey.

After storing your luggage at our office, we will head toward the Madre de Dios River, where we will board a motorized boat and begin navigating one of the main rivers of the Peruvian rainforest.

As we travel along the river, keep your eyes open for different species of Amazonian wildlife. With some luck, we may spot turtles, capybaras, tropical birds, and lizards resting along the riverbanks.

Our first stop will be Monkey Island, an area where you can observe different species of primates in their natural environment. The visit provides an opportunity to learn more about these animals and the importance of conserving Amazonian ecosystems.

We will then continue our journey to the ecolodge. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed with a refreshing drink prepared with local fruits. You will have time to settle into your private room and rest before our next activity.

In the afternoon, we will take a guided jungle walk, during which we will learn about different species of plants, trees, and animals. Our guide will share information about the tropical rainforest, medicinal plants, and the adaptations that allow wildlife to thrive in this ecosystem.

At night, those who wish to continue exploring can participate in a nighttime jungle walk. With the help of flashlights, we will look for insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other creatures that become active after dark.

Overnight at the lodge.

Day 2: Exploring Sandoval Lake Reserve – Wildlife and Flora

We will start the day with breakfast before heading toward the entrance to Sandoval Lake, one of the most representative destinations in the Madre de Dios region of the Amazon.

From the control post, we will begin an approximately 3-kilometer hike through the tropical rainforest. The walk will allow us to appreciate the diversity of plants and trees that make up this extraordinary ecosystem.

Upon reaching the lake, we will board a canoe and navigate its calm waters. During the journey, we will have the opportunity to observe different bird species and, depending on the conditions of the day, look for giant river otters, black caimans, turtles, and other animals that inhabit the area surrounding the lake.

Sandoval Lake offers an exceptional setting for nature observation and photography, especially during periods of lower human activity.

After exploring the lake, we will enjoy lunch in an environment surrounded by tropical rainforest. We will then return to the lodge to rest.

At night, you can once again participate in a nighttime jungle walk, an opportunity to discover how wildlife activity changes after sunset.

Overnight at the lodge.

Day 3: Amazon Adventure – Jungle Hike – Piranha Fishing – Suspension Bridges – Zip Line

The third day will be dedicated to combining nature and adventure.

After breakfast, we will take a jungle hike to discover some of the characteristic plant species of the Amazon. During the walk, we will learn about medicinal plants, large trees, and the different relationships between the flora and fauna of the rainforest.

Later, we will head toward the Gamitana River, where we will enjoy a traditional jungle activity: piranha fishing.

This experience provides an opportunity to learn more about one of the best-known fish in the Amazonian rivers and understand its behavior and role within the ecosystem.

After returning to the lodge and enjoying lunch, it will be time for adventure.

We will head to the suspension bridge and canopy area, where we can walk among different levels of the forest and experience the jungle from a different perspective.

For those looking for an additional dose of adrenaline, the tour includes a zip line located approximately 30 meters above the ground, always subject to safety conditions and activity availability.

At the end of the activity, we will return to the lodge for dinner and rest.

If you wish to continue exploring, you can participate in another nighttime jungle walk to discover the wildlife that becomes active after dark.

Overnight at the lodge.

Day 4: Puerto Maldonado – Journey to Tambopata National Reserve

After breakfast, we will begin our transfer toward the Tambopata River area.

We will travel by boat along the Madre de Dios River back to Puerto Maldonado and then continue by vehicle to the access point to the Tambopata River.

From there, we will board a boat and continue our journey upstream. During the navigation, we will be able to admire the rainforest scenery and look for animals commonly found near the riverbanks, such as capybaras, turtles, caimans, and various bird species.

Wildlife observation in the Amazon depends on natural factors such as weather, river levels, the season, and the behavior of each species, so every boat trip offers a different experience.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you will be welcomed with a refreshing drink made from Amazonian fruits. After settling into your room, we will enjoy lunch.

In the afternoon, we will take a guided walk through the tropical rainforest, exploring areas of both primary and secondary forest. Our guide will help us identify plants, trees, insects, birds, and other signs of wildlife.

When night falls, we will board a boat for a nighttime excursion along the Tambopata River. With the help of flashlights, we will search for caimans and observe some of the nocturnal wildlife that inhabits the riverbanks.

We will return to the lodge to spend the night surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

Overnight at the lodge.

Day 5: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – Tropical Forest Hike

We will wake up early to begin one of the most anticipated excursions of the program: a visit to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick.

We will navigate the Tambopata River during the early hours of the day, enjoying the Amazonian scenery and the opportunity to observe wildlife along the riverbanks.

Under suitable conditions, we may see capybaras, caimans, turtles, and different bird species during the journey.

Upon reaching the clay lick, we will wait for the macaws and other parrots that visit the site to consume mineral-rich clay. This behavior is part of the birds’ natural ecology and is one of the most well-known wildlife spectacles in Tambopata.

The number of birds and the length of the observation period may vary depending on the natural conditions of the day.

After enjoying this natural spectacle, we will return to the lodge for lunch and rest.

In the afternoon, you can continue exploring the area with a guided walk through the tropical rainforest or, depending on conditions and availability, enjoy a water-based activity such as kayaking.

During the hike, we will learn about Amazonian flora and look for signs of different animal species that inhabit the forest.

As night falls, we will take a final nighttime jungle walk, listening to the sounds of insects, amphibians, birds, and other nocturnal animals.

Overnight at the lodge.

Day 6: Tambopata Reserve – Puerto Maldonado – Airport or Bus Terminal

Our final day begins with breakfast at the lodge. Before starting the return journey, you will have some time to enjoy the surroundings, relax, and take photographs of the Amazon.

We will then begin our return journey by boat along the Tambopata River to the disembarkation point. From there, we will continue by vehicle to Puerto Maldonado.

Once in the city, our team will coordinate your transfer to the airport or bus terminal, taking your departure schedule into consideration so that you have enough time to complete check-in and boarding procedures.

This marks the end of our adventure through the Peruvian Amazon, after six days of exploring rivers, tropical forests, lakes, and some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Peru.
