Explore Tambopata National Reserve: An Unforgettable Journey into the Heart of the Peruvian Amazon

1 Day : Puerto maldonado to lodge

Your adventure begins upon arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal. From there, we’ll head to the Amazónico Lodge office, where you’ll receive a brief orientation before embarking on this unforgettable jungle expedition. For your convenience, we recommend storing unnecessary luggage and packing only the essentials.

Aboard a 4×4 vehicle, we’ll venture deep into the jungle for approximately two hours until we reach the banks of the Tambopata River. Here, a motorized canoe awaits to take you on a scenic ride to our cozy Monte Amazónico – Tambopata lodge. Depending on your arrival time, you’ll be treated to a delicious breakfast or lunch, made with fresh regional ingredients.

In the afternoon, we’ll take a guided introductory walk through the lush rainforest. This immersive experience offers the chance to spot a wide variety of wildlife, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and an astonishing diversity of insects.

Day 2: Visit to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick.

Rise and shine at 4:30 a.m. to begin your journey to the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, the largest of its kind in the world. During the 1.5-hour boat ride, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as capybaras (the world’s largest rodents), tapirs, and if you’re lucky, the elusive and majestic jaguar in its natural habitat.

Upon arrival at the clay lick, you’ll witness one of the Amazon’s most mesmerizing natural spectacles: hundreds of vibrant parrots and macaws gathering to eat the mineral-rich clay. This colorful ritual is a dream come true for nature lovers and wildlife photographers alike.

After a nourishing jungle breakfast, we’ll return to Puerto Maldonado and journey onward to our next eco-lodge. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed with a refreshing glass of tropical fruit juice.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit the renowned Monkey Island, home to species like the brown capuchin, squirrel monkeys, and the charming saddleback tamarin. Later, after sunset, get ready for an exciting night-time boat ride in search of white caimans along the Madre de Dios River—plus another chance to spot capybaras in their nocturnal environment.

Day 3: Sandoval Lake Exploration and Amazon Wildlife.

After breakfast, we’ll set off on a 3-kilometer trek through the dense jungle to reach the breathtaking Lake Sandoval, one of the largest and most biodiverse bodies of water in Tambopata National Reserve. From a traditional wooden canoe, you’ll explore this habitat filled with piranhas, hoatzins, cormorants, herons, and vultures. Keep your eyes open for howler monkeys, capuchins, tamarins, sloths, and with luck, the rare and endangered giant river otters.

Afterward, we return to the lodge for a delicious lunch inspired by traditional Amazonian flavors. In the evening, take part in a night walk, where we’ll observe exotic insects, frogs, and reptiles that become active under the rainforest’s starlit canopy.

Day 4: Canopy Walk and Farewell to the Jungle.

At 5:30 a.m., prepare for one of the highlights of the expedition: a trek to our canopy walkway, a suspended bridge located 30 meters (100 feet) above the ground. From this unique vantage point, you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the vast Amazon rainforest and the meandering Madre de Dios River. It’s the perfect place to spot colorful species like toucans, macaws, tanagers, and oropendolas in their natural habitat.

After one final breakfast, we’ll begin our return trip to Puerto Maldonado, where you’ll be transferred to the airport or bus station—concluding your unforgettable experience in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon
