Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado and Journey to Lake Sandoval .

After entering the Tambopata National Reserve, a scenic 3-kilometer rainforest hike leads you to Lake Sandoval. From there, paddle by traditional canoe through peaceful waterways to your Amazon lodge.

Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado and Journey to Lake Sandoval .

From Puerto Maldonado to the Amazon Rainforest

Your Amazon adventure begins when you arrive in Puerto Maldonado, either at the airport or bus terminal. Our team will welcome you and accompany you to the Amazonia Peru Expeditions office.

Before heading into the rainforest, you’ll complete a quick registration and leave your larger luggage in our secure storage area. We recommend packing a small day bag containing the clothing, personal items, medications, camera equipment, and other essentials you’ll need for the next three days.

Once you’re ready, we’ll make our way toward the river port and board a motorized boat.

The journey itself is part of the adventure.

As the boat moves along the waterways of the Madre de Dios region, keep your camera ready. The riverbanks and surrounding forest provide excellent opportunities to spot tropical birds, turtles, caimans, and other wildlife.

The further you travel from the city, the more apparent the transformation becomes. Buildings and roads give way to towering trees, dense vegetation, sandy riverbanks, and the sounds of the rainforest.

Arriving at the Lake Sandoval Reserve

Our journey continues toward the entrance to the Lake Sandoval area within the Tambopata National Reserve.

After completing the required registration at the checkpoint, we’ll begin our approximately 3-kilometer rainforest walk toward the lake.

The trail takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes, depending on walking conditions and wildlife sightings. Rather than simply being a transfer between the river and the lodge, this hike is your first opportunity to explore the Amazon on foot.

Your guide will help identify interesting plants, insects, birds, and other creatures hidden among the vegetation.
