Explore Lake Sandoval on a 4-day adventure through the Tambopata National Reserve in Puerto Maldonado. Journey through one of the most breathtaking destinations in the Peruvian Amazon while observing a diverse array of wildlife, including giant otters, macaws, caimans, and various monkey species. An ideal experience for those who wish to discover the beauty and biodiversity of the rainforest in a protected natural environment.
Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Sandoval Lake – Night Caiman Spotting .
Your adventure begins with a warm welcome at the airport or bus terminal in Puerto Maldonado. We’ll escort you to our Wildlife Travel Sandoval Lake Lodge office, where you can safely store any unnecessary luggage.
From there, we set off on a 50-minute motorized boat ride along the scenic Madre de Dios River, surrounded by lush jungle landscapes and vibrant birdlife.
Amazon Rainforest Upon arrival at the Tambopata Reserve checkpoint, we’ll begin a 3 km guided hike through the forest, making fascinating nature stops along the way.
At the end of the trail, we’ll board a traditional paddle canoe that glides across the mirror-like waters of Sandoval Lake, taking you to our cozy lodge.
After a delicious lunch, we’ll head out on a canoe excursion in search of giant otters, black caimans, and colorful birds that inhabit the area.
As night falls, prepare for a thrilling night walk into the jungle to spot caimans with the help of our expert naturalist guide.
Day 2: Amazon Wildlife Tour – Palm Tree Clay Lick – Jungle Hike – Night Safari.
At dawn (around 5:00 a.m.), we’ll visit a palm tree Clay Lick, a special spot where macaws, parrots, and other birds
feast on the vitamin-rich fruit of the aguaje palm. This superfruit is packed with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as
phytoestrogens and oleic acid, making it a key food source for the birds and an unforgettable wildlife photography opportunity.
After breakfast at the lodge, enjoy a guided jungle hike along natural trails in search of the region’s incredible
biodiversity. You may encounter giant trees, the walking tree, the “erotic tree”, playful monkeys, and if you’re lucky-
deer, tapirs, and other jungle mammals.
Cool off in the refreshing waters of the lake and soak in the breathtaking scenery. As the day winds down, enjoy a
stunning Amazon sunset before heading out on a night safari to observe nocturnal wildlife such as amphibians,
glowing insects, night butterflies, tarantulas, and even the elusive Titi monkey.
Return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Farewell to Sandoval Lake – Return to Puerto Maldonado.
On your final day, take a peaceful morning canoe ride across Sandoval Lake, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere and
spotting wildlife such as giant otters one last time.
Afterward, we return to the Reserve checkpoint and travel back along the Madre de Dios River to Puerto Maldonado.
We’ll retrieve your stored luggage and take you to the airport or bus terminal.
