Although the stated opening hours are from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., not every hour necessarily offers the same experience.

For travelers who want to make the most of bird activity and enjoy more pleasant temperatures, two time periods are particularly recommended:
Morning Visit: 5:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m.

Starting early allows you to enjoy the first hours of the day in a cooler and quieter environment.

If you are a birdwatching enthusiast, this can be one of the best options.
Afternoon Visit: 3:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

The second option is to visit in the afternoon. As the heat becomes less intense, the surroundings take on a different atmosphere, and bird activity may increase again.

This time slot also allows you to enjoy the changing Amazonian landscape as sunset approaches.

Travel tip: If you have the flexibility to choose, consider visiting Yacumama early in the morning or during the final hours of the afternoon rather than at midday. Macaw clay lick

Parrot Watching at Yacumama Lake

One of the attractions that may be of greatest interest to visitors is parrot watching.

These birds are part of the extraordinary biodiversity of Madre de Dios and can be found in large groups. Their presence adds movement and color to the landscape, particularly during periods of greater activity.

To enjoy responsible wildlife observation, avoid getting too close, making loud noises, or attempting to feed the animals.

Birdwatching : The best nature photography does not always require getting close. Maintaining a safe distance helps protect wildlife and allows you to observe its natural behavior.
Sport Fishing Demonstration

A visit to Yacumama Lake may also include a sport fishing demonstration, an activity that offers an opportunity to learn about some of the practices associated with the area’s aquatic environments.

Rather than viewing it solely as a sporting activity, the experience can provide insight into the relationship between local communities and the natural resources of their surroundings.

The conditions of the activity may vary, so it is advisable to check in advance exactly what is included in the tour you book.

Flora and Fauna in the Area

Madre de Dios is one of Peru’s regions with the greatest natural richness and forms part of one of the country’s most important Amazonian areas. Amazon peruvian

Around Yacumama Lake, you can appreciate different types of vegetation and, depending on the conditions of the day, observe birds and other animals characteristic of Amazonian ecosystems.

However, it is important to understand that wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Animals live freely in their natural environment, and their presence depends on factors such as weather, time of day, season, and the natural behavior of each species.

For this reason, a visit to Yacumama should be viewed as a nature experience rather than a tour in which a particular species is guaranteed to be seen.

How Long Does the Yacumama Lake Tour Last?

The tour lasts approximately 3 hours.

This makes it a convenient option for travelers who want to enjoy a short activity during their stay in Puerto Maldonado while keeping the rest of the day available to explore other attractions in Tambopata.

The exact duration may vary depending on the program booked, travel time, and activities included.
Opening Hours

Opening hours: 5:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Afternoon: 3:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Itinerary: Amazon Tour – Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick & Sandoval Lake

The wildlife observed during the tour is wild, so sightings can never be guaranteed. This uncertainty is precisely part of the authentic experience of exploring the rainforest.

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata National Reserve – Lodge

The adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon.

After meeting at the previously agreed meeting point, we will begin our journey into the rainforest. Depending on the lodge’s location and the program conditions, part of the journey will be by road, followed by a boat ride.

As we travel, you will gradually notice the urban landscape disappearing and being replaced by the Amazon rainforest.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you will have time to settle in and enjoy lunch.

Rainforest Interpretive Walk: In the afternoon, we will take an interpretive walk through the tropical rainforest.

Accompanied by a local guide, you will learn to identify some of the tree species, medicinal plants, fruits, and other elements that make up this complex ecosystem.

The walk will also be an opportunity to look for birds, insects, amphibians, and small mammals that inhabit the forest.

Observation Tower: Depending on the program conditions, you may visit an observation tower or platform, offering a different perspective of the Amazon rainforest.

From above, it is possible to observe bird activity and appreciate the vastness of the forest surrounding the lodge.

Night Safari: When night falls, the Amazon completely changes.

We will take part in a nighttime activity to search for caimans, frogs, insects, and other nocturnal species.

With the help of flashlights and the experience of your guide, you will learn to identify sounds and movements that often go unnoticed during the day.

Overnight at the lodge.

Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – Wildlife Observation

The second day begins very early.

An early departure is essential to reach the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick during the period of greatest bird activity.

After navigating along the river, we will arrive at an observation point where we can wait for this spectacular natural event.

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick: One of the Great Spectacles of the Rainforest

Clay licks are places where different bird species consume minerals found in certain areas of exposed soil.

At Chuncho, you may have the opportunity to observe macaws, parrots, and parakeets gathering at the clay lick.

The vivid colors of the macaws contrast with the deep green of the rainforest, creating one of the most memorable moments of the trip.

Bird activity depends on natural factors such as weather, rainfall, the presence of predators, and environmental conditions. Therefore, wildlife observation is an authentic experience rather than a staged show.

Return to the Lodge: After enjoying the clay lick, we will begin our journey back to the lodge.

Depending on river and weather conditions and the scheduled program, we may participate in an additional nature- or water-based activity.

After lunch, you will have time to relax or enjoy the surroundings of the lodge.

Night Walk: At nightfall, we will explore the forest once again.

The rainforest at night offers a completely different experience: the sounds of amphibians, insects, nocturnal birds, and other animals that remain hidden during the day.

Overnight at the lodge.

Day 3: Sandoval Lake – Tambopata National Reserve – Puerto Maldonado

The final day is dedicated to one of the most iconic destinations in the Puerto Maldonado Amazon: Sandoval Lake.

After the appropriate transfer and access, we will begin a walk through the forest until reaching the lake.

Sandoval Lake: Nature and Tranquility in the Heart of the Amazon

Sandoval Lake is known for its calm waters and the rainforest that surrounds it.

The excursion combines hiking and canoe navigation, allowing us to explore different areas of the ecosystem.

During the excursion, we may search for:

  • Monkeys and other mammal species.
  • Amazonian birds.
  • Turtles.
  • Caimans.
  • Giant river otters, with luck.
  • Butterflies and other insects.
  • Different species of Amazonian plants and trees.

Wildlife observation is carried out while respecting the animals’ natural behavior and maintaining an appropriate distance.

Return to Puerto Maldonado: After completing the Sandoval Lake excursion, we will begin our return journey to Puerto Maldonado.

The program ends with a transfer to the airport, bus terminal, or previously agreed meeting point.

This concludes our 3-day adventure in the Peruvian Amazon, after experiencing some of the most representative landscapes and ecosystems of Tambopata and the Peruvian Amazon Manu
