3-Day Rainforest Expeditions Tours  from Puerto Maldonado

Discover the Amazon rainforest on a 3-day Lake Sandoval tour from Puerto Maldonado, combining rainforest trekking, paddle-canoe excursions, wildlife observation, birdwatching, and overnight stays in the Amazon.

This extended itinerary allows more time to explore the Lake Sandoval ecosystem and take advantage of different wildlife observation periods. The program includes an afternoon arrival, rainforest walks, sunset and nighttime activities, early-morning canoe excursions, opportunities to search for giant river otters and black caimans, and additional forest exploration. Nuture Wildlife peru.

Wildlife sightings are naturally unpredictable and depend on weather, water levels, season, and animal behavior. Your guide will adapt the activities according to local conditions.

Day 1 — Puerto Maldonado, Rainforest Trek & Black Caiman Search

Arrival in Puerto Maldonado

Your 3-day Amazon adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado. After meeting your guide, transfer to the port on the Madre de Dios River and board a motorized canoe toward the Lake Sandoval access area.

The boat journey generally takes around 30 to 45 minutes, although the actual travel time can vary according to river conditions, water levels, weather, and local logistics.

As you travel away from Puerto Maldonado, the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly dominated by tropical rainforest, marking the beginning of your Lake Sandoval experience.

Rainforest Walk to Lake Sandoval

After reaching the access point, begin a rainforest hike of approximately 3 km toward Lake Sandoval.

Walking through primary and secondary forest provides an opportunity to observe the diversity of the Amazon ecosystem at ground level. Your guide may point out giant trees, palms, insects, birds, monkeys, reptiles, animal tracks, and other signs of wildlife along the trail.

The trek is also an introduction to the forest’s interconnected ecosystem, where plants, insects, birds, and mammals interact throughout the rainforest.

Paddle Canoe to the Lodge

At the canoe station, continue your journey by paddle canoe through calm channels and flooded forest toward the lodge area.

The quiet nature of paddle-canoe travel is particularly suitable for wildlife observation. Keep watch along the shoreline and vegetation for birds, monkeys, reptiles, and other rainforest species.

After arriving at the lodge, complete check-in. Depending on your arrival time and the day’s logistics, lunch or dinner may be served before the next activity.

Evening Lake Exploration & Black Caiman Search

As daylight begins to fade, explore the lake area with your guide. When weather and visibility are favorable, the evening excursion may include a black caiman search along the lake’s edges.

Using a flashlight, your guide may scan the water for the characteristic eyeshine of caimans. The activity also provides an opportunity to experience the changing atmosphere of the rainforest as nocturnal wildlife becomes more active.

Caiman sightings cannot be guaranteed and depend on water conditions, visibility, weather, and natural animal movement.

Return to the lodge for dinner and your first overnight stay in the Amazon rainforest.

Day 2 — Sunrise Canoe, Giant River Otters & Rainforest Exploration

Sunrise Canoe on Lake Sandoval

Begin your second day before sunrise with a quiet paddle-canoe excursion on Lake Sandoval.

The early morning is an excellent period for rainforest wildlife observation. As the sun rises, birds become active and the forest begins to fill with movement and sound. With patience and the help of your guide, you may have opportunities to observe wildlife around the lake and flooded forest. Amazon Rainforest

This is also a possible time to search for giant river otters, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Lake Sandoval Birdwatching & Wildlife

Continue exploring the lake while your guide searches the vegetation, shoreline, and water for wildlife.

Depending on conditions, species you may encounter include hoatzins, herons, cormorants, anhingas, kingfishers, macaws, monkeys, and black caimans. The lake’s varied habitats create opportunities to observe different species within a relatively small area.

For travelers interested in photography and birdwatching, the morning light and relatively cooler temperatures can make this one of the most rewarding periods of the tour.

After the canoe excursion, return to the lodge for breakfast.

Amazon Rainforest Walk

After breakfast, continue exploring the forest with a guided walk. Depending on local conditions and lodge operations, the activity may include a Brazil-nut trail, primary forest trail, or another designated rainforest route.

Your guide introduces you to Amazonian ecology and explains how different plants, trees, insects, and animals contribute to the rainforest ecosystem.

Along the trail, you may learn about traditional plant uses, rainforest adaptation, forest regeneration, and the characteristics of some of the region’s largest trees.

Afternoon Forest or Lake Activity

After lunch and time to rest, continue with another guided activity in the forest or around Lake Sandoval.

Depending on the schedule, the excursion may focus on searching for monkeys, tropical birds, orchids, ceiba trees, ironwood trees, leaf-cutter ants, and other examples of Amazonian biodiversity.

Rather than simply looking for large animals, this part of the experience provides an opportunity to notice the smaller details that make the rainforest ecosystem so diverse.

Return to the lodge for dinner and your second overnight stay.

3 day Rainforest Expeditions Tours & Sunrise Wildlife, Observation Area & Return to Puerto Maldonado .

Final Sunrise Canoe Excursion

Begin your final day with another early-morning canoe outing on Lake Sandoval.

A second sunrise excursion provides additional time for birdwatching, wildlife photography, and quiet observation. Because animals move freely through the forest, returning to the lake at a different time can provide opportunities to observe species or behaviors that were not encountered during the previous excursion.

Your guide will continue searching the lake margins, vegetation, and surrounding forest for active wildlife.

Observation Area & Canopy Views

Weather and local logistics permitting, the morning excursion may include an observation area or elevated viewpoint.

From a higher perspective, you can enjoy broader views across Lake Sandoval and the surrounding Amazon rainforest. This may also provide opportunities to watch birds flying above the forest canopy, including macaws, toucans, and other tropical species.

The exact location and availability of the viewpoint depend on the operating conditions of the tour and the day’s schedule.

Return Journey to Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, begin the return journey.

Paddle back through the lake and continue along the rainforest trail toward the river. Once you reach the river port, board the motorized canoe for the trip back to Puerto Maldonado.

Arrival is generally expected by late morning or early afternoon, but the exact schedule can vary because of river conditions, trail conditions, group pace, weather, and transportation logistics.

Your 3-day Lake Sandoval tour concludes in Puerto Maldonado.

If you are traveling onward by air, we recommend scheduling your departure flight for midday or later to allow sufficient time for the return journey and possible changes in local conditions.

Day 1 — Puerto Maldonado, Rainforest Trek & Sunset Wildlife

Arrival in Puerto Maldonado

Your Amazon adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, where your guide welcomes you and organizes your transfer to the river port. From there, you travel by motorized boat along the river toward the area that provides access to Lake Sandoval.

The trail offers your first opportunity to discover the remarkable biodiversity of the Amazon. Depending on the season and local conditions, you may encounter monkeys, colorful birds, reptiles, insects, butterflies, and towering rainforest trees.

Your guide helps identify wildlife, explain the surrounding ecosystem, and point out signs of animal activity along the trail.

Canoe Journey Through the Amazon :

Once you arrive at the lake, the adventure continues by paddle canoe. You travel quietly through flooded forest and calm waters toward the lodge area.

Sunset Wildlife Watching on Lake Sandoval : In the late afternoon, you head out for a sunset canoe excursion on Lake Sandoval. This is an excellent time to explore the lake as temperatures begin to fall and many rainforest species become more active.

Your guide searches the shoreline, vegetation, and surrounding forest for birds, monkeys, reptiles, and other Amazon wildlife. As daylight disappears, the focus may shift toward nocturnal species and black caimans that can sometimes be observed near the water.

After the evening excursion, you return to the lodge for dinner and your overnight stay in the Amazon rainforest.

Day 2 — Sunrise Lake Exploration, Wildlife & Return to Puerto Maldonado

Early-Morning Canoe on Lake Sandoval : Rise early for one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences of the trip. Before sunrise, you paddle quietly across Lake Sandoval while the rainforest begins to awaken.

The cool morning hours can provide excellent opportunities to observe giant river otters, monkeys, and tropical birds. Your guide carefully scans the lake and surrounding vegetation for movement and animal activity.

The peaceful atmosphere at sunrise also provides a memorable opportunity to experience the sounds and scenery of the Amazon before the day’s heat increases.

Amazon Birdwatching & Wildlife Observation : Lake Sandoval is an important habitat for a wide variety of tropical birds and other wildlife. During the morning excursion, you may encounter species such as hoatzins, herons, cormorants, anhingas, kingfishers, macaws, and other rainforest birds.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed because animals move freely through their natural environment. Your chances of seeing particular species can vary according to weather, water levels, season, and animal behavior.

Depending on the day’s schedule and local conditions, the excursion may also include an observation tower, offering a broader perspective over Lake Sandoval and the surrounding Amazon rainforest.

Return to Puerto Maldonado

After the morning activities and breakfast, you begin the journey back toward the lake access point. You paddle by canoe before continuing on foot along the rainforest trail.

At the river, you board the motorized boat for the return journey to Puerto Maldonado. The exact arrival time may vary depending on river conditions, trail conditions, wildlife stops, and the pace of the group.
